This was all really new stuff to Bart. We needed to keep him mentally connected by giving constant subtle cues and positive reinforcement or he could get nervous. As the next photo shows he did get "western" for a moment however he didn't gallop off, but rather wandered around visiting the obstacles and people on his own for a few minutes.
A little too scary of an object.
Walking back through the railroad tie alley.
Checking out the labyrinth.
Visiting Willis in the log star.
Coming up to Betty for her to take the lead.
Back to the railroad ties.
Straddling the little bridge (resting a hind hoof on a pole.)
Posing on the bridge.
The wind was starting to pick up and we just wanted Bart to have a good experience overall with the obstacles, so we quit on a good note.
Heading back to Bart's pen.
"Hey, you should have seen what they had me doing out there!"
The next afternoon, after spending the day in the
obstacle course with the other mustangs, some of the volunteers spent some time with Bart, making friendly contact and working on picking up and holding his feet.
