QLD Parks & Wildlife Suspected of Planning Clandestine Cull

Brumby Watch Australia takes steps to
Protect Fraser Island Brumbies

Story date: March 19, 2002

Brumby Watch Australia works to prevent another "Guy Fawkes" debacle!

Lyall Sempf and Brumby Watch Australia are monitoring what appear to preparations to conduct a shooting cull of the historic Fraser Island brumbies by the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service. Six years ago the QPWS had prepared for a secret cull of these brumbies. While it was believed by many that they already had guns and ammunition ready at the island, news of the proposed cull leaked out and there was enough publicity to have the cull stopped. According to BWA, informed sources believe another cull is being planned for the near future.

BWA and brumby enthusiasts want to prevent brumbies from being shot as occurred in the Guy Fawkes River Brumby Massacre. Some parks and Wildlife personnel apparently disregard established protocols for brumby management and have conducted very sloppy kills in the past. Public outrage over these activities appears to be the best means to bring political weight onto the side of humane management of these horses.

How you can help -

Write public officials in Queensland and advise them that you are concerned about the Fraser Island brumbies. Key points in messages should include:

  1. A statement as to the intrinsic value of wild horses,

  2. Suspicions that Parks and Wildlife is suspected of planning a clandestine cull and you want the matter investigated,

  3. Knowledge that Brumby Watch Australia is submitting a management plan for the Fraser Island brumbies, and

  4. A request for assurances that nothing is going to be done to these animals until the BWA plan has been able to be appropriately reviewed and considered.
