Once we knew for sure where the hoof structures were we could use a power saw.
Taking off the last of the excess toe

Reshaping the hoof

Since Rusty was familiar with his pen and the people around him, he got up calmly, first sitting up and getting his bearings, then he quietly raised up on all fours.
All finished - Rusty starts to wake up

Back on all fours

(A reminder as to what he used to look like)

We couldn't get real fancy with Rusty's feet since it wasn't healthy to keep him under sedation any longer, but we got rid of the overgrowth and he is now reasonably level. We'll watch how he walks on his "new feet" and make any necessary adjustments to his angles on his follow-up trim.
We have noted that within a few days Rusty was walking much more normally and relatively pain free, and he could be turned out to interact and roughhouse with the other "bachelor" boys at LRTC Foster Care. Eventually he returned back to his home range.
