Training Case Study:

"Scout"
Part Five

Off to Nevada

Shortly after the preceding activities took place, we moved Scout and a few of his friends to our ranch in Nevada. Scout participated in the December Frank Bell Natural Horsemanship Clinic on a day so windy that it literally blew our trailer dressing room door completely off its hinges.

The highlight of the clinic was the The Running of the Mustangs.

Scout unfortunately came down with a case of pigeon fever and had to be laid off for the rest of the season.

Once he was back in shape for training, we resumed our activities. In the meanwhile we met Tony Sumner, a mining engineer who has an uncanny knack for working with horses that had a troubled past. Scout liked Tony who became a periodic part of Scout's training experience.

One of the interesting ideas that Tony came up with involved making a "thumper" out of some old supplement bags. Since Scout still had some anxiety about strange, bulky objects approaching him the thumper was a great tool.

More about the thumper can be viewed here.

Tony also introduced us to Attwood boat bumpers. These soft bumpers turned out to be ideal for getting horses used to both the visible and touch sensation of riders' legs.

More about using boat bumpers can be viewed here.
