Training Case Study:

"Lucky"
Part Six
Lucky's First Ride

Although he was regularly packing the saddle and Betty had been standing in the stirrup and leaning over Lucky as he stood or moved quietly, Betty felt safer actually mounting Lucky for the first time bareback. She practiced by standing on a five gallon plastic tree pot and sliding her leg over his back from both sides.

On a windy November day Betty felt the time was right to climb on. She wanted some people around in case things got "busy" so I went into the round pen with her and James operated the camera.

Betty was very methodical and Lucky stayed clear headed throughout the activity. The only problem we encountered was that the tree pot was too short for Betty to comfortably get a leg all the way over so we had to use two pots stacked together to get a comfortable height.

For the first session Betty mounted up twice, walked a short distance and quit before Lucky got disturbed by anything. (The wind was forecast to subside the following day so Betty decided not to push her luck on their first day at this.)
