Training Case Study:

"Lucky"
Part Five

We happened to have the camera out one day when the group was working horses. We got a few shots of Lucky which we posted here.

Lucky the Saddle Horse

Later in the round pen we got some really interesting photos.

Here is Betty, who has never owned a "riding" horse before and who is determined to bring Lucky along herself... and Lucky, who has pretty much never trusted humans and who started captivity with unbelievable emotional explosions.
Mutual trust: Mounting lifts while ground tied
After a few lifts Lucky and Betty started doing what we call the "Comstock Two-Step."
Lucky: "Hey, Mom, check out this move!"
We got Lucky used to someone at his head while Betty did her lifts. (His head is up a little but his eye is calm.)
Lucky: "OK, if you say I can do this I guess I can."
One thing we were concerned about was what Lucky might do once he started moving with weight on his back. Betty wasn't ready to swing a leg over until she had an idea whether he would stay steady or accelerate and buck, so we gave it a try during a couple of lifts.
Some disengagements while Betty hangs on
