Training Case Study:

Kruzer
Part Four

Some final work on the line.
Backing into the squeeze.
Removing the lead without any resistance.
The next series of photos show Kruzer's next "serious" session.

Kruzer still had a phobia about having his face touched. Lee and Kathy continued to work with him in the squeeze but muzzle touches out in the open were out of the question. We picked a day and got serious about this issue.

Working on yielding and facing up... a hard issue for Kruzer.
Kruzer decided to get "stuck."
Kruzer then decided that it was easier to go along with the program.
Kathy back on the lead.
For muzzle shy horses, rather than reach out for their muzzles we prefer to slide out hands up and back along the lead rope until the motion no longer produces anxiety. A hand along the rope is less menacing and as soon as the horse accepts the handlers hand sliding into his "space," he will often tolerate brief touches without overreacting.
A brief muzzle touch.
