Training Case Study:

Kruzer

Kruzer, a 6 year old former band stallion, could be very physical. Early on we decided that he needed to be more comfortable around humans before putting him on a longe / lead line. We had a few sessions with people in the pen, touching him with bamboo poles and touching him with ropes, the latter usually involving two people on opposite sides of the pen holding ropes and letting them drop across his back.

Kruzer still wouldn't tolerate being touched by humans so we eased him into the safe squeeze and immersed him in humans. The first day was mainly scratching and rubbing by 5 people. The second day we focused on brushing him and untangling his mane. Such activities are social by nature and tend to settle the "touch-me-nots."

Lots of knots to untangle..
Having his face handled.
No problem attaching a lead line when it's time.
