Training Case Study:

"Black Bart"
Part Fifteen

Posing for the camera.

Glenn and Bart in the Horse Course (Continued)

The idea with the horse course is to take the obstacles quietly and correctly on a soft lead. Horse and handler need to communicate and the horse should develop confidence. A couple of times Bart raced out of a challenging obstacle until Glenn and Bart both developed a better feel for each other. After all, this was Glenn's first time with Bart, Bart didn't know Glenn, and Bart was not used to the sensation of packing a saddle and having stirrups bump his sides while he was concentrating.

Nonetheless, Glenn and Bart eventually mastered every obstacle they attempted and did so quietly and confidently.

Halting on the platform bridge.
Pausing on the tire platform.
Walking through the narrow pole walkover.
The temperature reached a 105 degrees, a record for this date. Bart never broke a sweat, even though he and Glenn had never worked together before and some of the obstacles were pretty challenging.

The next day came with dust storms, dry lightning and wildfires. We only spent a few minutes with Bart and during a break in the nasty weather went out onto the horse range and collected horse bones.

One of the lightning caused fires in the nearby Pine Nut Range.
