  WILD HORSES of STAGECOACH
Part Ten

The Whiteface Band

On Sept. 2, 2007, Tom Gribbin of the Virginia Range Wildlife Protection Association and I rode out into the hills next to Table Mountain to check the area. We wanted to check out a somewhat hidden trail behind Churchill Estates that wound through a saddle between the higher peaks and eventually led to the Carson River. As we started to climb out of the Stagecoach Valley we heard the distinctive sound of a stallion blowing.

Looking up we discovered a band of horses not seen by us before perched like mountain goats on the mountainside overlooking our position. We rode up to the horses' elevation taking photos as we went, however we stayed on the west side of the valley that separated their hillside from ours so as not to disturb them. We'll return at some point when we are not on horseback and can get closer for better photos without disrupting their activities.

Riding Snuffles the Wonder Horse and Corey.

Most of the band members had huge blazes or were slightly piebald so we have named them the Whiteface Band. Although we might have missed a small foal or two the band appeared to have ten members.
