"Pancho"
Part Two

Day 1, Continued

Since one of Pancho's trigger mechanisms involved humans getting close to make contact, we decided to use the bamboo pole method in order to initiate contact with Pancho in a non-threatening manner. Here are the steps that we used to achieve that contact without wearing him down or triggering a defensive reaction.

First contact with the pole
(Notice his head up, showing concern)
After being scratched for a while
(Notice he is starting to relax)
Getting closer with a shorter pole
Working my way up
the short pole
Hand at the end of the pole
Pole pulled away. Scratching by hand
(horse is again relaxed)
