Training Case Study:

"Black Bart"
Part Five

Bart in a halter.

Session Three - May 6th

We started the session with review, polling, ropes across his back, around his legs, etc., and a short time with the sliding neck loop. We also made a quick halter but he slid it off his nose. We rubbed his cheeks with a rope halter but he was still too wary of his off side to be haltered in the open without possibly starting a struggle.

After a short break we put Bart into the safe squeeze and let him get settled with people rubbing him on his off side. After he accepted being touched it took about ten seconds to quietly slip on a halter and fasten it. We let Bart return to the "play pen" and got him used to yielding to pressure, a concept that was pretty tough for him to grasp at first.

Getting settled in the halter.
Assuring Bart that everything is still OK.
"How'd I get the rope on that side?"
"Oh man!!!"
Standing quietly to be "untangled."
A little more reassurance.
