WILD HORSES of STAGECOACH

Part Twelve
The Carson River Roans
On September 8th we decided to try a little 4-wheeling to see if we could get better photos of the Whiteface Band. We didn't see the horses on their perch so we followed the Jeep trail down to the Carson River side of the headlands. Just before we reached Ft. Churchill Rd. we saw a band of roans grazing in the brush that we had never photographed before.
I walked over to a good spot where I could take better photos and the stallion, a big battle scarred roan, quietly walked over towards me to check me out. His band followed. I left just before he reached my position as it isn't a good idea to let horses make contact with humans, but he studied the scent of my footsteps for some time after I returned to our vehicle.
The band of seven grazing.

Another view of the band.

A close-up of a mare and foal.

The stallion noticed me watching him.

They're all headed my way now.

Pretty close! (No zoom needed for this shot.)

Taking in my scent where I stood to shoot photos.

The dark spots are all battle scars.
