"Nani" and "Spring"

Part Five

"Let's go exploring!"
(Continued from Part Four.)

Walkabout!

On Saturday April 19th we decided to try a short walkabout. Nani was leading quietly and would go through gates and around corners without too much difficulty. James kept a lookout to make sure we weren't disturbed by any of the grazing horses and we took a short walk outside the pen.

Nani was fine. Spring was another story altogether.

Spring didn't seem worried that Nani was leaving and puttered around checking out interesting sights and smells, and sampling clumps of grass and weeds. Nani wasn't comfortable going far from Spring so it was a short walk.

The next day Betty was out and we decided to try the walkabout again. This time we would venture out before the grazers were turned loose and Betty would keep Spring moving if need be. The additional humans in the group (Betty plus Sharon who took pictures) subtly kept Spring from wandering too far from mom although she still did some exploring.

These photos were all taken on this second adventure out.

Outside the pen
"Who's that?"
"This grass looks good."
I've gotta check this out."
Starting to work with Nani
End of the session - heading home
"What's over there?"
"Who are you guys?"
"I guess I'd better follow Mom."
"Wait for me!"
We also kept this session light and short, quitting before the foal got bored and Nani grew tired of it. If we can plan the lessons so that they don't stress the mare and foal relationship, Nani should progress just fine and the foal shouldn't develop a fear of humans.
