"Nani" and "Spring"

Part Four

Continuing Progress

It had been over two weeks since we had first haltered Nani. (She foaled the next morning.) We had some concerns as to how much she would remember. She seemed to like going into the safe squeeze to be brushed and get a snack while Spring would wander around the round pen so it seemed safe to pick up where we left off.

Nani haltered easily and we backed her out of the squeeze.

In our previous session we had just begun to ask her to yield to pressure. It was apparent that we needed to repeat those drills, however Nani didn't get upset and she kept track of her foal while we proceeded through an easy going lesson.

On the line
Starting to give to pressure
Rope over her back
"Can I walk up and touch you?"
Standing for a scratch
"I have a rope over my back!"
"If you bring me a carrot."
End of a good session
We didn't want to stress Nani or her foal so we kept the session light and short, quitting before she grew tired of it. Next time out we should be able to start some simple leading and brushing while on the lead.
