Now that the fronts are complete, the rear legs and feet are similarly evaluated for loading, straigtness and balance.

When shoeing is complete, Champagne will be walked out and her feet and stride observed to make sure she is striking level and her hooves are "breaking over" properly.


Here is an example of the pad material used on Campagne. This is a flat nylon pad and its purpose is to cushion the impact of Champagne's footfalls at speed. The shoe selected is a wide web shoe, both for support and to accomodate the pad. Since the center of the pad is trimmed away before being applied, it is called a "rim pad".

Here is a closeup of one of the removed shoes. Notice the "knuckles" on the ends of the nails (in the highlighted oval) which show that well formed clinches held the shoes in place
