Danny Love's Farrier's Corner

Correct Horseshoeing
Part Three

Next it is time to pare out the sole and sensitive frog with a hoof knife. Dead hoof material is removed and the fresher sole tissues are inspected for signs of bruising, punctures or other potential problems. The sole is left slightly dished shaped so that the shoe, when nailed on, will ride on the hoof wall and not put pressure on the sole.
Once the hoof pared out, Danny holds the leg level and looks across the bottom of the hoof to see if the hoof wall is level, and if not, making note of how much needs to be trimmed from each side to make it level. (This step will be repeated after the hoof wall is nipped to ensure a level and balanced surface is maintained.)
Now the hoof wall is trimmed with the nippers
The freshly nipped shell is finished off with a rasp where minor adjustments can be made.
