UNTO THESE HILLS
Words and music (c) 2006, Willis Lamm Grandfather's great-grandfather handed down the story, of a nation called the Cherokee. They lived up in the mountains where they thought they'd stay forever. They did not know that this was not to be. The white man came and found the gold the mountains had been hiding. He wanted all this land just for his own. Then in ten short years many walked the Trail of Tears. The Cherokee was driven from his home. The darkened night heard the women cry in vain. As winter brought its lonely chills. The people called out to the Eagle once again. Holding fast unto these hills. The Cherokee, they were the people of these mountains. A nation's roots lay in the land. But might makes right and the ground is for the taking. When the ruler issues his command. Unto these hills some intrepid warriors hid. Surviving by their strength and by their skills. Living their lives as their elders did before them. And there they stayed unto these hills. (Instrumental) Though times were hard the Great Spirit never failed them. Nor the pride that He instills. The seasons changed and the Cherokee remained. Holding fast unto these hills. Dohiju noquo? Dohiju noquo? (How are you) Iginvtli Anijisqua Aniyvwiya?I. (My brother bird clan Cherokee?) Unalii, unalii. (Friend, friend) Gvgegui Jalagiyi Ayeli. (Love, Cherokee Nation.) The soldiers came and tried their best to find the people hiding. A few braves fell but many sill stayed free. Another ten years later those still living in the mountains Were left alone according to decree. The years have passed and the Cherokee survived. They perservered with stamina and sheer will. The Cherokee were scattered all across this great big land. But some remain unto these hills. The Cherokee were scattered all across this land. But some remain unto these hills.
