On the third weekend Betsy and Shane came over in shifts.
We got Shiloh and Sheba out and went through a few basic drills
and turned them out together in the arena. Betsy practiced
haltering Shiloh in open spaces as she would occasionally game
Betsy in that regard. We turned Sheba out to hang out on the
stable lawn and graze.
When Shane came over we decided to see how Sheba would handle things on her back. She let us toss up a saddle pad without much fuss, then we strapped on a bareback pad. Finally we placed the colt breaking saddle on her. A couple of times things hit her side and she fussed and moved, so we simply pulled the saddle and let it drop, immediately going back, replacing the pad and saddle. Each time we put it on she was calmer. We finally set the front and rear cinch and let her walk out wearing it. This part was pretty much uneventful. Eventually when she got up to some speed, the slapping of the stirrups bugged her and she ran a few laps around the round corral, bucking and kicking her hind legs under her like a rabbit in an attempt to slap the stirrups. When she settled down we sacked her out and slapped the stirrups by hand on a loose rein. She worked some more under saddle. Later as I was preparing to remove the saddle, a stirrup I had folded across the seat slipped down and poked her in the ribs which caused her to go out for a few more laps, but she did whoa the third time I asked her and was calm for the saddle removing. Monday Sheba got turned out to simply hang out in the stable all day and spent a little time with Shiloh. Wednesday Cheryl came out to work Annie. I haltered up Sheba and turned her loose. Sheba followed me off line around the stable while Cheryl and Annie followed. In the horse course Sheba even followed me off-line through obstacles such as the mound, bridge, cavaletti and stairs. Later I brought her over to the trailer where Cheryl had been practicing loading Annie and Sheba loaded without much fuss at all.
