"Wild Horse Annie"
|
Outraged over the cruel and inhumane treatment of wild horses by "mustangers,"
a Reno Secretary named Velma Johnston known to the world as "Wild Horse Annie,"
started a campaign of education and legislative efforts which forever changed the
condition of America's wild horses and burros. Her success began with a 1952 ban
on aircraft for rounding up wild horses in Storey County where she lived and culminated
in the modern federal Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act.
