Most mail browsers have filter options. What a filter does is look for a unique address or word string in each message as it arrives. When it finds what it is looking for, the filter takes a specific predesignated action with the message. For For example, you can have a filter automatically file new list mail into a separate whmentors folder. Before activating a filter you need to have a place for the list mail to go. Your first step is to go into your mail window and create a new folder, such as "whmentors," where the messages can be filed. (Note: Some older browsers can only accept folder names which are 8 characters or less, so since "whmentors" contains 9 characters, you may need to abbreviate the folder name.) There are two logical ways to filter list mail. The first is to filter based on the "From:" field. In this case you will want your filter to look for mail from whmentors@imagicomm.com (or whmentors-digest@imagicomm.com). If your mail browser can't filter based on the "From:" field, then set it to look for [whmentors] (or [whmentors]) in the body of the message. Be sure to include the [brackets]. Once you have established the recognition portion of the filter, set the filter's action to file the message in your new whmentors (or abbreviated name) folder. All subsequent messages from the list will be filed in this folder and can be read there. Instructions regaring the specific steps to take to set up filters in your particular mail browser can be found by opening the Help window and searching for the topic "filters" or "mail filters." (In Netscape Communicator, when you search out "Filters" in Help The program will take you to the "Getting Started with Netscape Messenger" help box which is quite long. Information on filters can be found about 2/3s of the way down in the section which discusses mail folders and folder properties.) Also, please remember: If you establish a filter for list mail and you switch from whmentors to whmentors-digest (or vice versa,) be sure to update your filter to look for the new name.
