What the AMBA is all about
Jason C. Randall

The American Mustang and Burro Association is a national non-profit tax exempt IRS 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to the protection and preservation of wild equine, to public education and awareness and to adopter support. The AMBA was founded in 1981 by William "Bill" Barrett, Valley Mills, TX. The Headquarters was transferred to Liberty Hill, TX in 1982 and Dee Dee King served as Executive Secretary through 1989. For the next three and a half years Barbara J. Rehfield directed the organization as Chief Executive Officer, with headquarters in Benton City, WA. On May 1, 1993, AMBA headquarters moved to Lincoln, CA, and George W. Berrier, Jr. assumed the position of Chief Executive Officer.

Our membership is composed of both adopters of wild horses and burros and nonadopters, people who are just concerned about the plight of our country's living legends of the American West -- wild horses and burros. All memberships, donations, and bequests are fully tax deductible. We offer several membership levels to suit everyone's interests and pocket books.

Our registry is the most comprehensive in the nation for wild equine and their descendants. We are setting up volunteer State Coordinators and Chapter Secretaries all across the country in an effort to bring our services and programs closer to our members and to build a support network for adopters. We sponsor playdays, shows, clinics, educational programs and demonstrations, referral services, the nation's only Wild Horse and Burro Information Hotline and Abuse/Neglect Hotline, a Rescue/Rehab/Relocation service, a Volunteer Bureau and a new youth educational program. Our members assist with compliance checks, adopter recruitment and some range studies. Our programs include Breeder Division and Stud List, and a Championship Points and Awards Program. (As we grow, not all programs are available in all areas -- yet!)

AMBA is also developing the nation's first Wild Horse and Burro Museum and Library. Members receive our newsletter, THE JOURNAL, and monthly updates as needed. Please read the JOURNAL for more information on the American Mustang and Burro Association -- we need your help in our efforts for America's wild horses and burros!

For more information, please feel free to contact the American Mustang and Burro Association, Inc. at: AMBA, P.O. Box 788, Lincoln, CA 95648.

This is not a BLM or AMBA site. It is operated by independent wild horse and burro enthusiasts.
