Desensitizing "Bridle Shy" Horses
| |||
In the first section, we showed getting Dahlia desensitized to the presence of the headstall. A few minutes later she was ready to "wear" it. Since Dahlia tended to clench her teeth, Sharon opted not to try to force the bit into her mouth. Instead she simply laid the leadrope across the end of her muzzle, between her lips. Dahlia opened her mouth and began playing with the leadrope. Within a few seconds she was comfortable with the "leadrope bit" and and I put down the camera and went in to assist. While Sharon held the leadrope, I quietly placed the headstall on the horse without incident. Through this brief procedure, Sharon did not restrain Dahlia, but rather simply held the leadrope in place until the bit was in proper position, then Sharon quietly pulled the leadrope out of her mouth.
