  Wheeler Side-Mount
"Crescent Moon" Street Light

Wheeler Reflector Co. primarily produced traditional style pendant street lamps, most commonly with radial wave and side-cutoff "crescent moon" reflectors. Most of these reflectors were similar to other manufacturers' designs in that they screwed on or clipped on to ordinary-style pendant luminaires. Wheeler's NEMA design was interchangeable with components of other manufacturers that were constructed to NEMA standard specifications.

However Wheeler also came up with a lightweight, compact side-mount design for its "crescent moon" style lamp. This luminaire was built around a side-mount slip fitter that contained a photo-control socket as well as a side-mounted lamp socket. One version was designed for 189 watt (2500 lumen) or 295 watt (4000 lumen) incandescent lamps while another was designed to use 100 watt (1100 lumen) mercury vapor lamps.

This particular luminaire was designed for use with incandescent lamps. The shape of the reflector directed light more appropriately onto the roadway while also protecting "dark skies."
