  Evolution of an intersection

Here are some photos taken several years apart of the same intersection. These photos show the evolution from lamp post mounted porthole signals (shown above) to modern mast arm configurations.
Early 1940s. Single suspended fixed 4-way heads replace lamp post mounted heads.
Early 1950s. Single faced heads starting to replace fixed 4-ways.
Horizontal neon pedestrian "DONT WALK" / "WALK" heads installed on corners.
Early 1960s. Fixed 4-way heads replaced by single faced heads.
1970s. Two single faced heads facing each direction, one on each mast arm and one on each mast.
Pedestrian heads are now the symbolic orange hand and white walking man.
