  FIXED FOUR-WAY SIGNALS
In the New millennium
Part Three

  Variations

In some jurisdictions a fourth section was added to fixed four-way signals in order to display a second (redundant) red light.

When most fixed 4-way signals were being installed 8" diameter arrow lenses were permitted. (Under current standards all arrow lenses are to be 12 inches.) So it was not uncommon to see a fourth section or a pendant head that displayed protected left turn arrows.

New York State is the mother lode of old fixed 4-way traffic signals. There are hundreds of them still in service, many maintained in excellent condition. Most are Crouse-Hinds however the other major makers are still well represented in this state.
