HOW TO STOP RECEIVING SPAM
(Unsolicited Junk Email)
We all get it. Unsolicited email which runs the gamut from stock deals
and get rich schemes to adult entertainment. Folks on the internet
capture our email addresses and sell them to the mass marketers. None of
us are immune.
We can, however, do something about internet junk mail. Some kinds of
mass mailings are illegal. All legitimate internet service providers (ISPs)
prohibit SPAM and once they are aware of an account which is generating
SPAM, they will usually terminate it.
As internet users we can't completely stop SPAM, but if we work together
we can make it much more difficult for Spammers to do their work and in
many instances, we can "filter" SPAM directly to our trash folders.
Steps Which we Can Take
There are three basic steps which we as internet users can take to reduce
unwanted junk mail. They are:
- Forward junk mail to the "abuse" officer of the originating ISP.
- Set our mail filters to "kill" all mail from renegade ISPs who
do not enforce anti-SPAM rules.
- Forward repeat violators to our own ISP and ask for ISP level
filtering or that they file a formal complaint about the renegade ISP.
If we each simply take an extra minute and forward a complaint when we receive
SPAM, we will make it difficult for these operators to maintain their presence
and we will aid in the disenfranchisement of renegade ISPs that fill the internet
with garbage.
Without our efforts, SPAM is only going to get more pervasive. If we all get
involved as sort of an internet "Neighborhood Watch," we will help keep this monster
under control.
The following links will help you filter and report spammers.
Another Significant SPAM Prevention Tip
Know those chain letters, virus warnings and other mail you get which
urge you to forward copies to all of your friends? Guess what? Nearly
all of the "prize packages" and virus warnings are frauds. They get you
to circulate these "snowballs" which pick up hundreds and hundreds of
your friends email addresses along the way and... you guessed it... the
outfits that sell email addresses to the spammers get them.
Do your friends a HUGE favor. Don't put their email addresses on ANY chain
mail and send it to them. You're just feeding them to the spammers. You might
also consider asking whomever sent you the chain to please cease and desist
and explain that when they do, they give your email address to everyone down
the chain, including the email address gatherers.
Thanks for participating in the effort to curtail SPAM.
