Horse Abuse in Texas?

  ALLEGATIONS SURFACE REGARDING THE CONDITION
AND TREATMENT OF WILD HORSES AT RAY FIELD'S
WILD HORSE FOUNDATION

Story date: November 21, 2003

The Wild Horse Foundation's web site boasts the organization as being "A New Texas Tradition," "Nevada Horses get Great Care" and "Gentle Is the Touch." According to recent visitors to the facility operated by Ray Field, his New Texas Tradition is one of abuse and neglect.

One credible visitor to the facility who wished to remain anonymous due to Field's volatility wrote, "It was a horrible place for these rescues. Ray said they had been there since March and I asked him that at least 4-5 times. I think he thought I was dingy because I just couldn't let it sink in that the horses looked so bad for being there for so long."

Volunteers from California based Least Resistance Training Concepts viewed the animals while in the custody of the Nevada Dept. of Agriculture prior to being released to Field. At that time the animals appeared healthy, well cared for and in reasonably good condition.

The photo captions that appear in quotes are the actual comments made by the on-site photographer.

Debilitated condition of some of the horses
"This mare had a draining infection coming out of her face, very swollen glands and had been this way since she came there. He (Field) claimed that she was gong to cost him a thousand dollars in medicine to fix it."
Another view of the mare with the abscess, showing the Nevada Dept. of Agriculture freeze brand.

"She was very wild and had a very sad dull eye to her, but also thin and a wormy hay belly."

"These horses are some of the Nevada Comstock he (Field) said he received in March, still very poor for 7 months being there."
"This is a yearling colt, they (Field and Calhoun) bid and bought from the Reno show in July. They said he was donated by Steen Kiger ranch and is the grandson to Spirit." Field's check for the horse bounced and Expo officials had to threaten to have him arrested before they got their money.
"Ray was a bully to this colt, handles him with no respect and will cause him to become a nasty stallion. Claimed he is worth $5000 right now. I asked him why don't you sell him and put the money into the rest of your rescues? Oh, he'll be worth $10,000 next year."
