The Rescue of
Little "Iron Man"

Part Two

Eventually we reached a dirt track where the LRTC trailer could be brought up.
Waiting for the trailer.
While waiting for the trailer the volunteers discussed naming the foal. Since the area was known as Iron Mountain and he was such a tough little guy going without food for so long and handling all the strange activities, we decided to call him "Iron Man."

The volunteers loaded little Iron Man into the trailer and Shirley rode with him to the LRTC Lucky Horse Corrals. (Shirley remained in constant communication with the driver.)

Mission accomplished. Corey likes having a job to do on the wild horse range.
The next day (Monday) we went to check the area one more time and found the stallion in a melancholy state standing near the mare.

On a more positive note, Shirley reported that after a long nap, Iron Man started eating quite well, explored his new environment, made friends with some of the other animals and pretty much made himself at home. This time of year foals spend the night in the "baby horse room" where Shirley can sleep on a small bed. Three times Shirley had to patiently show Iron Man that he couldn't climb into bed with her, however he would wake her up by suckling on her nose when he was ready for another bucket of mare's milk replacement. He also immediately made the connection between the refrigerator, the microwave and food.

Making friends with "Dewey" the dog.
A little time outside. (He likes getting out into the play yard.)
Nap time!
And nobody can cut a tail hole in a pair of Depends and fit it to a baby horse like Shirley.

On Monday Ed Pearce and John Tyson came over from KOLO (Reno Channel 8) to do a story on Iron Man. Word is that Iron Man really enjoyed being the center of attention and had everyone in stitches. Bob R. uploaded the newscasts to YouTube and they can be seen here.

The story of Iron Man now merges with the story of the Indian Lakes Foals, since he has a new mob of baby horses to interact with.

We also posted the story of Iron Man and the Indian Lakes foals on YouTube, complete with a video clip of Iron Man playing that can be viewed here.
