Danny Love's Farrier's Corner

Correct Horseshoeing
Part Two

Danny now looks at each leg from the front. Notice how the horse's right leg is slightly out of balance with the plumb line drawn on the picture. The knee and toe point slightly inward and you can see the heel bulb appears slightly to the outside. If one looks at the leg as a stacked column, the inside loading which was seen in the foot can be associated with the balance of this leg which gives slightly to the center. (To the credit of this horse, the photo angle exaggerates the appearance of this condition.)
Now that the legs and feet have been evaluated, it's time to straighten up the nail clinches.
Next, it's time to file off the clinch edges, making sure not to file a groove in the hoof wall.
The nails are pulled with a puller. (Since this horse wears pads, the nails shouldn't be pulled by prying back the shoe.)
