Training Case Study:

"Misty"
Part Two

Herbie readying Misty for ponying

After three days Misty was getting more comfortable with people when on the line but she still was disinterested in humans when we would walk into her pen. We put her on the tie pole and let her hang around us for quite a while. Sharon and Suzi worked on some basic clicker behaviors. Since Misty didn't like carrots, Sharon had to improvise with the treats, using grain with some carrot pieces mixed in. Misty didn't fall for the trick and pretty much spit out all the carrot pieces.

"Are there carrots in there?"

At the tie pole we did notice that Misty got pretty spooked over riders on horses. We took her out to the horse course, followed James on Corey for a while, then James ponied Misty off Corey and she relaxed quite a bit.

Ponying Misty around the Horse Course
Sunday brought out a whole group of mentors. James pulled Misty out and she spent the day in the crowd, including standing at the tie pole next to the picnic table during lunch, surrounded by adults and active children. She seemed to start to enjoy getting attention and would whinny at us when we left her alone.

She also got her vaccination and her front feet trimmed. She was a perfect lady for both.

"Before and after"
The next day we srtarted working on Misty's hind feet. She wasn't too comfortable with having her hind feet handled. She also had an aversion to sticks and crops. Since it is safer to first desensitize a horse by rubbing with a crop before handling those dangerous hind feet, Tami spent some time getting Misty comfortable with being touched and stroked with a Tellington "Wand."
